You may have heard the title of this commemoration less. This commemoration, which is on the 15th of Bahman, is one of the commemorations that ancient Iranian were celebrating. People were excited and cheerful in the middle of winter. They thought that because the cold is gone and it would soon be replaced by the delightful season of spring, and with the coming of spring the earth would come to life, it would be a time of commemoration and satisfaction.

The various aspects of this commemoration make it more and more appealing. It is one of the occasional aspects that has been very significant for people in this commemoration. Different narrations of Valentine’s Day

According to the narrative remaining from that time, a priest called “St. Valentine” was killed for supporting Christian and Roman youth to get married by order of the emperor “Claudius II”. But when he died in this way, no one overlooked his name. Even after that, churches were called after him. As time passes, according to the commitment and respect that people had for “St. Valentine”, people called him a patron saint. There are many beliefs about this story. For instance, some people suppose that Valentine’s Day is the day Valentine’s priest was killed.

Meanwhile, some people believe that this day is the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial. Various groups of people say the idea that the Catholic Church has selected this history in order to Christianize an ancient and pagan custom of Lupercalia that was frequent in Rome. The feast of Lupercalia was a commemoration of fertility in Rome until the end of the fifth century. But Pope Gelasius I prohibited it in 948. That is why February 14 was stated Valentine’s Day to prevent these idolatrous acts.

4) Father’s Day

People commemorate Father’s Day precisely one day after Valentine’s Day. In Iran, Father’s day coincides with the birth of Hazrat Ali (AS), the 13th of Rajab. Because the date of this day comes from the Lunar calendar. It is not likely to assign a particular day in the solar calendar to Father’s Day; Because its history alters each year. 5) The day of love and commemoration of Sepandarmazgan

Sepandarmazgan or Espandegan is the day of the earth and the day of lovers in Iranian culture and civilization. This celebration, like the commemoration of the middle of winter, has been one of the customary events in ancient Iran. People hold this ceremony on the 29th of Bahman. We can state that this day comes from the Achaemenid Empire. Based on a book titled “Asar al-Baqiyya” written by Abu Rihan al-Biruni,  Esfand 5th has also been named the day of celebration for the earth, lovers, and women. There are other ancient sources that declare the 5th of Esfand as the day of earth, love, and woman; But based on the alternations that have happened in the Iranian calendar and the winter months have 31 days; People hold this commemoration on the 29th of Bahman.

The origin of the word Sepandarmazgan

The word Espand, which returns back to Middle Persian, is originally from the Avestan language of the words “Sepandarmat” and “Spanta Armaiti”. The word “Spanta Armaiti” in Avestan culture is the name of the fourth Emshaspand, which has two parts: “Spanta” and “Armaiti”. Spanta means authentic and holy and Armiti means modesty and tolerance. Generally, the word Espand means authentic and holy modesty. With these explanations, we can realize that in ancient Iran, a particular day belongs to love. It can be a great opportunity for people to show their love and kindness to their beloveds. Also, nature and the earth had a particular significance to the people of that time, and celebrating this day shows it.
